Briefing on Meeting held on January 30, 2010

Today was an informational and educational day for most NYIT clubs who attended the meeting held by the Office of Student Activities (OSA) and the Student Government Association (SGA). New recognized club members (like the PR TEAM/Club) were able to meet and mingle with established clubs who not only welcomed us, but who extended an open invitation for us to contact them if we are ever to run into any issues.

The meeting was extensive and provided a wealth of information dealing with NYIT’s club politics and reaffirming the OSA and SGA’s role on the NYIT roster. This is important because most of the NYIT “run around” is based on the fact that we, the student body, don’t know who to speak to when we run into an issue.

The chief members of the SGA, the President of the SGA (Artison Ortiz) and other members each explained their role in the SGA, functions, and what to be expected from them. A more detailed SGA information package will either be discussed and/or handed on the next club meeting, so that each club member can have a better idea. In order to set a solid foundation for this new club, we need to have a working knowledge of NYIT’s politics, how the SGA runs, and who’s who at NYIT Campus Life.

A key player of the whole event, Director of Student Activities, Megan Siemers and Student Activities Graduate Assistant Rick were also present. Megan served as moderator of the event. Also at the meeting was some of the most notable NYIT senior staff such as Dean of Campus Life-Manhattan, Mr. John F. Agnelli, III and the Director of Administration and Planning Ms. Regina Robinson. As well as faculty member and advisor of the Great American Mentors (GAM), Judge Michael Gregorek made his presence and support felt to the PR Club as well.

Once the meeting got started each club that was present introduced its club, stated goals, and what they expected from the SGA. The SGA introduced themselves and discussed guidelines and an improved paperwork method of how clubs and organizations were going to be dealt with at NYIT: No more forms! Everything will be found online.
Budget was discussed by the Vice President of Finance (SGA) Romena, with Megan’s collaboration. The budget system has changed and is all online. They are learning the new system as we all go along. We are all going to have to be patient, prompt, as well as cooperate as best as possible.

The meeting continued to hearing Dean Agnelli’s motivational and informational speech (I will try to get a handle of that powerpoint presentation). He went over the Student Affairs organizational chart, and stated his promising goal at NYIT after talking about his extensive background in higher education.

In order to best provide student leaders with the latest and enhanced tool, NYIT has signed on to the services of OrgSync. OrgSync was created by alumni of the University of Texas, who as student leaders ran into the problems that we usually run into on campus (with our clubs). Their goal was to create a better way to communicate on campus and keep students involved. Jami Jeffries-Director of Implementation at OrgSync was a guest speaker who not only spoke about how this tool was designed with students in mind but also trained the administrators who were there at the meeting.
More extensive information on this meeting is on the agenda to be discussed in our next club meeting.

I wanted to thank Mike Volano, David Shoulov, Dr. Matic, and Prof. Wycoff for making PR Club a recognized club this semester. But the work doesn’t end at the formation of a club, it just begins. We all need from each other to collaborate and make it a seasoned club.

Hey all,

I would like to personally thank everyone that attended our S.G.A. meetings during the summer time. We just kicked off our Fall 2009 semester and are looking to establish meetings once again.

The Student Government Association is currently mandating a minimum of two representatives to indulge themselves for an enticing student orientation. The scheduled days throughout the summer semester fall on a Tuesday.

Here are the dates of the eight meetings to follow:

Our representatives are currently being mandated to attend these meetings throughout the summer. To promote, The P.R. Club as an existing establishment for another semester. We shall receive Fifty Dollars (USD) for each mandatory meeting

Semester Grind Down

Our quorum of members have diligently attended our meetings throughout this current 2009 Spring Semester. The Student Government Association will approve us a week from now on April 30Th 2009.

Our Constitution, Founders, Members of our society have the motivation and teamwork needed to succeed. New York Institute of Technology shall give birth to the most publicized communication arts department. Located on the 10Th floor of the Manhattan (NYC). Our successors shall provide the glorified Golden Blue image all around the globe.

This chapter shall bridge the gap between Old Westbury (Dorothy and Alexander Schure) & Central Islip Campuses to establish the United States version of a Public Relations Chapter. We are aware that our NY IT name coexists around the globe. We have campuses also in Aaliyah, Bahrain/Vancouver, Canada/Jiangxi,Nanjing, Shanghai - China/Amman, Jordan/Abeu Dubai, United Arab Emirates Ministry.

Be prepared to create a biography and reveal other personal information for the generalized public. We are in the current movement of establishing a professional website once we get approved for our club than chapter. Until than good luck with your finals, projects, studying.

GOALS

Our Chapter has four major goals:

1) EVENT - In house speaker guests, fund raising events, out house trade seminars, PR firm visits, and PRSSA events.

2) NETWORKING - With the guests, employers and on campus.

3) CAREER OPPORTUNITIES - Internships and job offers due to chapter network.

4) PORTFOLIO - PR pro bono jobs and PRSSA competitions.

We are currently using facebook to keep up to date with meeting times, since we cannot create our chapter until next semester. Stay Tuned.

Next Meeting in on Tuesday at 16W 61st Street; Room 721 4:45 to 5:45pm. Refreshments will be served.

The student society aims to foster the following:

Understanding of current theories and procedures of the profession.
Appreciation of the highest ethical ideals and principles.
Awareness of an appropriate professional attitude.
Appreciation of Associate Membership in PRSA a nd eventually accredited membership.

We are currently in the works of being established as a chapter of NYIT. There are currently 284 universities in PRSSA, our chapter should be the 285th. Professor Matic and Wyckoff shall assist in creating PRSSA at NYIT.

There is a form which needs to be filled out with a $100 fee. Once completed we will be an official chapter. I believe membership dues are $50 or less depending upon how the school approves of it.
